To ensure the best color, it is recommended to provide some protection from the hot afternoon sun. In some years, the variegation on 'Sagara nishiki' is so thick, it looks yellow from a distance. This variegated Japanese maple will continue to grow for the next 10 years, reaching about 7-8 feet in height. With the fall season, it turns a striking golden yellow to orange, creating a show-stopping display.

Sagara operates in its own lil world. There’s nothing else that looks like it, period. The dark greens can almost almost reach navy blue. Then the bright yellows and chartreuse dappled variegation just give it such a bright, distinguished character and texture. It can be a fairly slow grower, mostly because it needs to live almost completely in the shade, in hotter areas. The mild areas could likely give it a few hours off morning sun. It can be sensitive to a lot of direct sun and heat. Less fertilization, less hot sun, and less water seem to be the ticket for me. Definitely in my top 5, no question.
